Our work, a bacon of hope

25 October 2023

As a special needs teacher, my journey in Kwanjana has been nothing short of transformative. Choosing to be a special needs teacher volunteer at For A Change was a decision born from a deep passion for inclusivity and an unyielding belief in the potential of every child, regardless of their abilities.

The diverse range of learning difficulties present among my students is one part of my work that makes it more exciting. From dyslexia to autism to attention deficit disorders, each child brings a unique set of challenges that require individualized educational methods and approaches, which call for a creative approach to teaching.  I have used a combination of educational occupational therapy, hands-on activities, and sensory diet to engage my students and make learning interesting.

Progress maybe slow, but it is steady. Every small step forward is a significant achievement for these learners. Patience, coupled with unwavering perseverance, has been the basis of our progress. The sense of accomplishment that comes from witnessing a student overcome a learning obstacle is immeasurable. From identifying letters of the alphabet to mastering basic math skills. One of my proudest moments was when a student, who had struggled with the alphabet, stood before the class, and identified and recited half the letters of the alphabet. The sheer determination and courage displayed were a testament to the progress we have made. These milestones are celebrated with joy and pride.

The impact of our efforts extends beyond the classroom. Parents and/or guardians, once hesitant and unsure, have witnessed the potential within their children, and perceptions have shifted from one of limitation to one of boundless possibility. One emotional moment was when a parent shared with me the newfound hope they had for their child’s future. They had seen the progress and, more importantly, they had seen their child’s self-esteem blossom. This transformation in attitude and belief was a testament to the power of education as a catalyst for change.

The growth I witness in my students is awe-inspiring. Faces once filled with frustration and self-doubt now radiate confidence. Their inquisitive minds, once stifled by barriers, now flourish in an environment that celebrates their unique strengths.

One of the major highlights of the work in Kwanjana is when we have friends visiting us to support our work. Special thanks to Jacolien, Esther and Dianne, and Hannah and Julia whose impact transcends the boundaries of classrooms, leaving a permanent mark on the hearts and minds of our students.

Teaching in Kwanjana has had its challenges. One such example was in November 2022; around the time when I had finally started to see some change in Yamikani. News about his accident came after about two hours of knocking off, and eventually a confirmation of his demise by the evening of 17th November. This left all our hearts in pieces, but God was kind. We had such an amazing bond. I am not sad that it ended but glad it happened.

Above all, it has been a journey of immense reward. The impact we have had on these children’s lives and the broader community is a testament to the power of dedicated educators at For A Change, and the unwavering belief in the potential of every child.

As my journey continues, I am reminded daily of the immense potential that lies within each child, waiting to be unearthed and nurtured. Together, we are not just educating, we are creating a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow for all learners, regardless of their abilities.

Our work in Kwanjana is a beacon of hope for the future. We are not only shaping the lives of these special learners, but we are also sowing the seeds of inclusivity and understanding for generations to come.

As I look ahead, I am filled with hope and determination to continue this important work. Together, we will continue to break down barriers, challenge perceptions, and create a world where every child, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to thrive.

The journey continues, and the possibilities are boundless!
